With everything going on in the world today, it’s a time like no other that we as mothers and believers become hyperfocus about teaching our babies about God early on in life. Teaching your baby about God will begin to nurture their faith giving them a jumpstart. We are equipping them with the best tool in our arsenal.
As believers, we are called to share the blessings of the Lord and the Holy Spirit with the next generation. We must remember children are the future. So, if we want a better tomorrow we must take the necessary steps today with our children.
Now that I’m a mother, I’m passionate about sharing my faith with my son; it brings so much joy to my heart. Remember to pray and ask God for wisdom and knowledge and how he wants you to teach your children. But to get you started,
This post is all about 5 ways to teach your baby about God.
“Train up a child in the way he should go, And when he is old he will not depart from it.”
-Proverbs 22:6
LET’S TEACH OUR BABIES ABOUT OUR SAVIOR, OUR STRENGTH, AND STRONGTOWER!
1. Start Reading Early
The first step to teaching your baby about God is to start early. Research has shown that while in the womb, babies are already developing listening, learning, and remembering; primarily in the last stage of pregnancy. While language skills start as early as 10 weeks gestation. It may feel weird reading to your growing belly at first; especially as a first-time mom. But with repetition, the awkwardness fades and you begin to bond with your baby while teaching him or her about God.
Start day one! Read to them, even though their little minds may not understand just yet, reading to them is a great way to start teaching your baby about God. Nevertheless, it’s never too early to start.
For my husband and I, we would sit in the nursery and bond over some of our childhood faves. A little back story, we didn’t grow up in a religious home. We knew of God but we didn’t go to church every Sunday. So, forgive us but we had no idea the world of children’s books that were available with the sole purpose of teaching children about God. By the end of my pregnancy, we’d read the entire children’s bible to our little bean.
2. Pray with them | Even basic prayers
Praying with your baby is a great foundation to teach your baby about God. It’s like laying the groundwork to raise little believers. Praying in the mornings, praying before going to bed, praying before they eat, praying about any and everything.
Praying in the earlier stages is training them to be little warriors of their own. Prayer also teaches them to be patient. My son loves to eat! The boy gets excited when he’s locked in his highchair and sees the tray coming his way. In the beginning, when we would pray before eating, he would get a little squirmy and a little frustrated. Now he’s quiet and patient as we pray, patiently understanding that this is a part of what we do. Teaching your baby about God is about the baby steps.
3. Lead by Example:
Proverbs 22:6 “Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.”
Another way to teach your baby about God is to lead by example. Parents are the best role models our children can have. We know our babies better than anyone besides God, of course. But we know what they need sometimes before they even say it.
So, as parents, we should lead by example. Praise God out loud, Worship God in front of them, whatever that may look like for you, do it. Do it in front of them. Get them involved. A praise and worship dance party is a fun way to get them involved. The first time I saw my son in front of the record player moving his arm to worship music just melted my heart. Leading by example creates a safe place to learn about God, their creator.
4. For God is Love
Another way to teach your baby about God is to show love and affection in front of them. Some couples choose not to show much PDA in front of their children believing that it’s inappropriate. God is love.
Displaying what a healthy relationship looks like by hugging and kissing in front of them; in reasoning, of course, is teaching them about God. Same with hugging and loving on them, they can see and feel the love among all of you.
“We know how much God loves us, and we have put our trust in his love. God is love, and all who live in love live in God, and God lives in them.”
1 John 4:16
5. Kids app
Last but not least, to teach your baby about God is a kids-friendly bible app. Now I’m sure there are more options in the world of bible apps for kids, but The Bible app for kids has been something that my son enjoys.
We started him when he was about 6 or 7 months old, loves it to this day. It is a great resource that teaches your baby about God, as it journeys through bible stories in bite-size pieces in a fun and interactive way. It gives you the option to have it read the bible stories aloud.
Something that I also appreciate is the bible trivia questions. At his current age, we answer the questions for him, but at some point, he will be able to answer them for himself. But for now, it’s nice to see his face light up with excitement.
Have Screentime concerns?
One last thing, if you’re worried about your baby’s screen time, the stories are less than five minutes each, which is another plus.
There you have it, Five easy ways to introduce and teach your baby about God and start Raising Little Believers.
